Best Dragon Ball Z Wallpapers for iPhone, Beyond Goku

Dragon Ball Z has one of the most colourful casts in anime, and those colours decide which wallpapers work on an iPhone.

Goku gets most of the attention, but he is only one reason Dragon Ball Z looks the way it does. The villains change shape and colour from saga to saga, the heroes wear bright uniforms, and even the show's symbols are easy to recognise from across a room. That gives you far more to choose from than another Super Saiyan poster.

It also gives you a practical problem. Art that looks great in a gallery can fight with the clock once it is on your iPhone, because Dragon Ball Z images are busy and saturated, and much of the hair points straight up. Choosing by colour first solves most of this. Our Goku guide covers his forms in detail, so this one looks at everybody else.

Choose the character by colour

Dragon Ball began as Akira Toriyama's manga, and Toei Animation made the anime. Its strong, flat colours are helpful here, since each character behaves in a predictable way on a lock screen.

  • Vegeta: blue, white and black. The dark blue suit gives you a calm base, and a white clock reads cleanly over his black hair. In Super Saiyan art the hair turns gold, and it becomes harder to read a white clock against it.
  • Piccolo: green, purple and white. A strong, unusual palette. The white cape is the one pale area, so keep it below the clock, or choose art in which the cape sits in shadow.
  • Teen Gohan: gold and purple. The look most fans picture from the Cell Games. Purple and gold contrast well, and the purple gi gives you a darker lower half for widgets to sit against.
  • Frieza: white and purple. A pale subject needs a dark background. On a black or deep purple backdrop, the final form stands out clearly.
  • Cell: green and black. The spots add a lot of detail, so he works best on a simple background and from a little further away.
  • Majin Buu: pink. The softest choice in the cast, and the easiest to pair with a lighter home screen.

The general rule is simple: the paler the character, the darker the background should be. A bright figure on a bright sky leaves the clock with nothing to stand on.

Keeping the clock clear

Your iPhone crops a picture to fill a tall, narrow screen, so the space above a character has to exist in the art itself. Much Dragon Ball Z art places the head in the upper third, which is exactly where the date and time sit.

Characters without tall hair have an advantage. Piccolo, Frieza and Cell all have compact head shapes, so the clock can sit in the space above them. Vegeta's hair climbs much higher, so look for portraits with plenty of sky over him.

To place the art, touch and hold your Lock Screen, tap Customize, then pinch and drag the image. Avoid zooming in by a large amount, because that enlarges every pixel. The blurry wallpaper guide explains why a small file never recovers. If you want the character to overlap the clock slightly, see the depth effect guide, which works best with one clear subject and a plain background.

Symbols and quieter designs

You do not need a full character portrait for people who know the show to spot it. A smaller symbol also leaves much more room for the clock and your notifications.

Good options include:

  • The Dragon Balls. Seven orange spheres with red stars, which look striking on black.
  • Shenron. The green dragon's long body suits a tall screen, since it can wind from the top to the bottom.
  • The Capsule Corporation logo. Clean and graphic, and it looks at home on a work phone.
  • The Turtle School symbol. The single character from Goku's gi, shown large in black on orange.
  • The Majin mark. A bold M that works in almost any colour.

These designs also suit true black wallpapers on an iPhone with an OLED display, where a small bright symbol seems to float on the screen.

Why group shots rarely work

Group art feels like the obvious choice for a show with a cast this big, but most of it is composed for wide screens. To fill a portrait screen, your iPhone has to keep a narrow slice of the image, so you can lose half the characters along with most of the detail.

A landscape 4K image cropped to portrait has fewer pixels than a modern iPhone screen, so it can look soft even when the original seems sharp. If you want several characters, look for tall art with the figures stacked from top to bottom. Otherwise, save the wide group shots for a tablet, and use one character on your phone.

Live auras on an iPhone

Energy auras and lightning suit live wallpapers, because a small movement reads clearly in a short time. It only lasts a moment, though: an iPhone live wallpaper moves on wake, unlock and tilt for a second or two, then holds still. It does not loop, and your Home Screen does not animate. If yours never moves, check why a live wallpaper may not move.

Matching the Home Screen

Dragon Ball Z art is often too busy to sit behind rows of icons. You have a few simple ways to deal with this:

  1. Use the blur option. When you customise the Home Screen, iOS can blur the wallpaper, which keeps the colours and removes the clutter.
  2. Pick a calmer crop. The same character from a darker, quieter part of the image usually works well.
  3. Match the icons. If your iPhone runs iOS 18 or later, tinted icons can pick up the main colour of your wallpaper. Our icon guide has more ideas.

Quick answers

Which Dragon Ball Z character looks best on a lock screen?

Vegeta and Piccolo are the easiest, because their darker colours give a white clock something to sit against. Frieza can look excellent too, as long as the background is dark.

Why does my wallpaper look blurry?

Usually because a wide image has been cropped to a tall screen, or the file was small to begin with. Start with portrait art at high resolution, and avoid heavy zooming.

Will a live Dragon Ball Z wallpaper keep moving?

No. It moves briefly on wake, unlock and tilt, then stops. It does not animate on the Home Screen.
