Combination Vehicles is where Class A separates from Class B. Once there is a trailer behind the tractor, the vehicle stops behaving like a long truck and starts behaving like two connected objects that can disagree with each other.
The exam covers that difference: how the combination handles, and how you connect and disconnect it safely.
Coupling, in order
Examiners listen for sequence here just as they do with air brakes.
- Inspect and prepare. Check the fifth wheel for damage and proper lubrication, the mounting secure, the release arm in the correct position, and the jaws open.
- Position the tractor. Line up square with the trailer and back until the fifth wheel is just ahead of the kingpin. Never back under at an angle.
- Secure the trailer. Chock the wheels or confirm the trailer brakes are set so nothing can roll.
- Connect the air lines. Supply and service lines to the correct glad hands, then charge the trailer air system and confirm the trailer brakes are working.
- Back under slowly. In low gear, until the kingpin locks into the jaws.
- Check the connection. Pull forward gently against the locked trailer brakes to confirm it is coupled.
- Inspect the coupling visually. Get out and look. No space between the fifth wheel and the trailer apron, jaws fully closed around the kingpin, safety latch engaged.
- Connect electrical and raise the landing gear. Secure the cable so it cannot catch, and raise the gear fully.
The visual inspection is the step people skip, and it is the one the test cares about most. A gap between the fifth wheel and the apron means the trailer is resting on the fifth wheel rather than locked to it, and it will drop.
The gap is the whole point
If you remember one thing from this exam, make it this: no space between the fifth wheel and the trailer apron. That gap is the signature of a coupling that looks connected and is not, and it is the failure mode that drops trailers on the road.
Uncoupling
The reverse, with its own order. Position on firm level ground, ease the pressure off the locking jaws, set the trailer brakes, lower the landing gear until it takes the weight, disconnect the air and electrical lines and secure them, pull the release handle, and drive out slowly.
The recurring test point is the landing gear: lowered enough to take the weight before you unlock, but not so far that it lifts the trailer off the fifth wheel.
How a combination handles
Three behaviours dominate the questions.
Off-tracking. The trailer's wheels follow a tighter path than the tractor's through a turn. The longer the combination, the wider you must swing. This is why turns are taken by going further into the intersection before turning rather than cutting the corner.
Rollover. Combinations roll far more easily than people expect, particularly with a high centre of gravity. The two protections are keeping the load low and centred, and going round curves slower than the posted advisory speed, which is set for cars.
Trailer skid and jackknife. If the trailer wheels lock, the trailer swings. The correct response is to release the brakes and let the wheels roll again so you can regain steering — which is the opposite of instinct, and exactly why it is on the test.
Trailer brakes and the hand valve
The trailer hand valve exists to test the trailer brakes. It is not for stopping the combination and it must never be used to hold a parked vehicle.
Using the hand valve in a skid makes things worse, because braking only the trailer is what causes it to swing. Questions on this are common and the wrong answer is the intuitive one.
Air lines and the glad hands
The air system running back to the trailer has its own set of test points.
Two lines connect: the supply line, which charges the trailer air system, and the service line, which carries the signal when you press the brake pedal. They are colour coded and the couplers are shaped to resist being connected the wrong way round, but crossed lines are still a classic error and a classic question.
Cross them and the trailer brakes will not work when you need them, while the system may appear normal at a standstill. This is why the coupling sequence includes charging the trailer air and confirming the trailer brakes hold before you rely on them.
Glad hands should be inspected for damaged rubber seals, and unused ones stored on dummy couplers so dirt and water stay out.
Trailer air supply and the emergency system
When the supply line loses pressure — a broken line, a trailer separation — the trailer emergency brakes apply automatically. That is the same spring-brake principle that governs the tractor, extended to the trailer.
The practical consequence is that a trailer breaking away brakes itself rather than rolling free. The exam asks about this in a few different ways, usually by describing a failure and asking what happens next.
It also means a supply line leak is not a minor fault. It is the thing standing between a mechanical failure and a runaway trailer.
Backing a combination
The skills test is where this bites, but the written test asks about the principles.
A trailer reverses in the opposite direction to your steering input, and it amplifies small errors. The corrective habits are the same ones examiners score: go slowly, use small inputs, and get out and look rather than guessing.
When the trailer starts to drift off line, the correction is early and gentle. Waiting until the angle is obvious means the only fix left is to pull forward and start again — which is allowed, costs a point or two, and is far better than jackknifing into a cone.
Quick answers
Do I need this test for Class B?
Only if you tow a trailer rated over 10,000 pounds, which would move you into Class A territory anyway. For a straight truck it does not apply.
What is the most common coupling mistake?
Not getting out to look. The pull test tells you the jaws gripped something; only the visual check tells you they gripped the kingpin correctly with no gap.
How do I stop a trailer skid?
Release the brakes so the trailer wheels can roll again and you can steer. Braking harder or using the hand valve makes it worse.
Is this the same as doubles and triples?
No. Combination Vehicles is a core test for pulling one trailer. Doubles and Triples is a separate endorsement for pulling more than one.
