CDL Skid Recovery and Emergency Manoeuvres

Skids and brake failures are the questions people freeze on, because the correct answer is almost always to stop doing whatever started the problem. Here is how the CDL manual handles drive-wheel skids and trailer jackknifes, front-wheel skids, emergency steering, brake fade and escape ramps.

A skid is not one emergency. It is four different emergencies that feel alike from the driver's seat, and the knowledge test expects you to tell them apart before you touch anything.

One rule covers most of them: whatever you were doing when the skid started — braking, accelerating or turning — stop doing it. A locked wheel cannot steer, and a rolling wheel has traction that a sliding one does not.

The four ways a skid starts

The AAMVA CDL manual lists four causes, and most test questions are built on one of them.

  • Over-braking — braking hard enough to lock the wheels. It also covers speed retarders: when the drive wheels have poor traction a retarder can push them into a skid, so turn it off whenever the road is wet, icy or snow-covered.
  • Over-steering — turning the wheels more sharply than the vehicle can actually turn.
  • Over-acceleration — feeding too much power to the drive wheels so they spin.
  • Driving too fast — the manual is blunt about this one. Most serious skids come from driving too fast for road conditions.

An empty rig is the harder case, not the easier one: brakes, tires and springs are built to work best loaded, so an empty vehicle has less traction and locks its wheels more readily.

Drive-wheel skids and the trailer swing

The rear wheels lose traction two ways.

Over-acceleration on ice or packed snow spins the drive wheels. Lift off the accelerator, and if it is very slippery push the clutch in too — otherwise the engine keeps the wheels from rolling freely and finding traction again.

Over-braking locks the rear wheels, and locked rear wheels slide sideways. In a tractor-trailer, that slide is the start of a jackknife. Correct it in this order:

  1. Stop braking. Release the brakes so the rear wheels roll again and stop sliding.
  2. Turn quickly. Steer in the direction you want the vehicle to go, back down the road.
  3. Countersteer. As the vehicle comes back on course it wants to keep turning. Unless you turn the wheel quickly the other way, you finish up skidding in the opposite direction.

For a trailer skid, the mirrors are your early warning — any time you brake hard, check that the trailer is still where it belongs. Once it has swung out of your lane, a jackknife is very hard to prevent. The fix is the same: release the brakes to get traction back. Do not reach for the trailer hand valve — locked trailer wheels started the problem, and the hand valve only locks them again.

A front-wheel skid ignores the steering wheel

A front-wheel skid behaves nothing like the one above. The front end runs straight ahead no matter how far you turn the wheel, so the usual correction does nothing.

Driving too fast for conditions causes most of them. The other two causes the manual names are worth remembering: not enough tread on the front tires, and cargo loaded so there is too little weight on the front axle. The only cure is to let the vehicle slow down — stop turning and stop braking so hard, and steering returns as the front tires start gripping again.

Steering out of it, and braking when you have to

Numbers explain why the manual prefers steering to stopping. At 55 mph on dry pavement it adds perception distance (about 142 feet), reaction distance (about 61 feet) and braking distance (about 216 feet) into a total of roughly 419 feet, with air brakes adding about 32 feet of lag. Steering around an obstacle needs nothing like that, so you can almost always turn to miss something more quickly than you can stop for it.

Steer with both hands, and do not brake hard while turning hard — locked wheels in a turn are the drive-wheel skid above. Treat the turn and the countersteer as one movement. A fully loaded rig is far likelier to roll than an empty one, so a violent swerve trades one emergency for another.

When you do have to stop hard, the manual gives two methods. Controlled braking is as much pressure as you can apply without locking the wheels, with only small steering corrections. Stab braking is full pressure, release the moment the wheels lock, then reapply as soon as they roll again. Under 49 CFR 393.55, antilock brakes are required on air-braked truck tractors built from March 1, 1997, other air-braked commercial vehicles from March 1, 1998, and hydraulically braked trucks and buses from March 1, 1999. ABS does not necessarily shorten stopping distance; it keeps the wheels turning so you keep steering control.

Brake fade and the long downgrade

Brakes slow a truck by turning motion into heat. Ask them to absorb a whole mountain and they get too hot to work: you press harder for the same result, and eventually you get nothing. That is brake fade, and escape ramps exist because of it.

The downgrade procedure is a sequence, and the order is the point.

  1. Pick your safe speed before you start down. Weight, the length and steepness of the grade, road conditions and weather all feed into it. Never exceed the posted limit or a posted maximum safe speed for trucks.
  2. Be in the low gear before you start down. Do not plan to downshift on the way; once speed builds you may not get back into gear at all. A modern truck often needs a lower gear going down than it used coming up.
  3. Let the engine hold you back. On a long or steep downgrade the brakes are only a supplement to the braking effect of the engine.
  4. Snub-brake to hold the speed. Apply the brakes hard enough to feel a definite slowdown. At roughly 5 mph below your safe speed, release — the application should last about three seconds. With a safe speed of 40 mph, that means braking at 40, releasing at 35, and repeating to the bottom.

When the brakes are already gone

If a hydraulic system loses pressure, downshift, pump the pedal to try to build pressure back, and use the parking brake — holding the release button so you can control how hard it comes on. Then find somewhere to put the truck: an open field, a side street, anything uphill.

On a downgrade, the answer is the escape ramp. They are built on many steep grades and stop a runaway with a long bed of loose, soft material, sometimes combined with an upgrade. Use it if there is one; if there is not, take the least hazardous escape route you can find — which is an argument for noting where the ramps are before you start down.

Practice the scenarios before test day

Emergency questions are written as situations rather than definitions, so reading a rule once rarely sticks. CDL Prep Exam 2026: Permit gives a clear explanation after every answer and brings back the questions you got wrong, with timed mock exams to practice deciding at speed.

Then read the driving-safely chapter of your own state's CDL manual, since every state adapts the model text, and say each recovery out loud as an ordered sequence: stop braking, turn, countersteer; gear, safe speed, snub, ramp. That is the form the questions take.
