There are dozens of anime wallpaper apps on the App Store, and many of them describe themselves as the best. Most have a large gallery, a dark interface and a list of the same famous series. Choosing one comes down to a few things you can actually check.
A declaration of interest: we make Anime Wallpaper 4K – Live, which is on this list. So we have used only what you can verify. Ratings and update dates come from the US App Store on 3 November 2026, and collection sizes are what each listing claims. Everything here is free to download, usually with ads or optional purchases.
A few things are worth checking first.
Recent updates. Wallpaper apps depend on new content, and iOS changes how wallpapers behave. An app untouched for years can still work, but it is unlikely to be growing.
Number of ratings. A 4.9 from 80,000 people means more than a 5.0 from twenty.
Real iPhone sizes. A picture that is not made for a tall screen gets cropped badly, particularly once the clock and widgets sit on top. Our guide to setting a live wallpaper on iPhone covers the fitting.
Ads and price screens. Try saving a few wallpapers before you settle. That tells you more than any description.
Anime Wallpaper – Live Engine: the biggest following
4.9 from 83,796 ratings. Last updated October 2026.
This has by far the strongest rating in the group, and it is actively updated. The listing covers live wallpapers across action, romance, slice of life and fantasy, and it also mentions widgets and Apple Watch, along with a subscription. If you want to start with the most widely liked option, start here, and check what the subscription covers before agreeing to it.
Top Anime Wallpaper: for sheer size
4.7 from 39,251 ratings. Last updated August 2026.
Its listing claims more than 100,000 images, which is the largest number in this comparison, with series such as Naruto and Attack on Titan. It is mainly a still wallpaper collection. If you search by character or series, and you care about range above everything else, this is the one to try.

Anime Live Wallpaper – 4K: for a focus on live
4.8 from 4,041 ratings. Last updated October 2026.
This one is built around live wallpapers, with a listing that claims more than 500 in 4K, new additions each week, and modern series including Solo Leveling and Jujutsu Kaisen. It is a smaller collection, more narrowly focused. It suits people who specifically want motion on their Lock Screen, as long as they understand the limits explained below.
Older apps that still have fans
Otaku Anime Wallpapers HD (4.6 from 9,664 ratings) was last updated in August 2024, and its listing mentions more than 300 wallpapers. AnimeWalls (4.8 from 1,200 ratings) was last updated in August 2022, and it adds image filters. Both have good ratings built up over time, but neither has been updated recently, so do not expect much new content, and check that they behave properly on your version of iOS.
What live wallpapers can really do on iPhone
Whatever a listing suggests, iOS sets the rules. A live wallpaper on the Lock Screen moves briefly when you wake or unlock the phone, and sometimes when you tilt it, for a second or two. Nothing loops continuously, and the Home Screen never animates at all. If an app promises constant motion, it cannot deliver that on an iPhone. Every app here is subject to the same limit, so judge them on their artwork rather than on motion claims.
